Prayer of Confession

We give thanks, O God, that you are unchanging, that your concern for justice and righteousness is such that you came in human form to share the message with us in person. We confess that all too often we hesitate to speak or act on behalf of people treated unjustly. Forgive us for uncaring attitudes when we base our opinion of another person's worth on what they own, or how they look; on what they say, or how they live--rather than loving them for who they are: beloved children of God. Our hope lies in the promise of your mercy. Heal, restore and bless us, we pray, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Lord, I continue to stand in awe of how You are concerned with my small self and short life. I do not know the "end result" except the overall goal of sanctification and drawing nearer to You each day through each encounter and experience. However, You bless me when You reveal ways in which You are knitting together moments, both big and small. I am so short-sighted, but I can trust in You alone, Lord, who sees me, holds me, and promises to carry me.

I "randomly" saved this prayer of confession above from church growing up and recently found in among some other "artifacts." It is fascinating to me that something about these words spoke to me then and now seem like a theme for my life.

Lord, You have opened my eyes to so many injustices, especially through living in Guatemala and now with the current immigration crisis. Two Guatemalan children from the caravan recently died in U.S. custody at the border. A few months ago, a young, unarmed Guatemalan woman was shot at the border by a U.S. man. This is injustice! Lord, please show me how to respond. How can I seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You, O Lord?

Great abolitionist William Wilberforce said, "You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know." Lord, I know, and I want to do something about it. Please give me eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to perceive what You are already doing and how I can be a part.
